I have been listening to David Sylvian’s new album Manafon the past few days and find the whole thing is breathtaking, mesmerizing…stunningly poetic…incredible beautiful.
This is not easy stuff, but this sort of artistic expression is the way the artist produces his vision without any regard for audience expectations. Challenging? Yes!
This only requires one to be open to an experience of art. Beautiful in all it’s empty spaces. The ambience, the minimalism and the maturity in his music. Music like this doesn’t just fall out of the sky. Carefully chosen and placed one after the other, every note put where it belongs.
As he says himself; Manafon is the sister album of Blemish. He has continued along this line. This artist never stands still. David Sylvian is in charge of his own creativity and is not afraid of showing what he is feeling and going through. This album is not a smooth ride, but after a few listenings I have started to appreciate the work.

This song is strange, wonderfull, dark, atmospheric, mysterious; it some kind of soundtrack. The combination of soundscapes and acoustic instruments is a recommendation, a treat for the ears.

In addition to downloads its now easy for any band to sell ringtones created from their songs. Most services require no up front costs or long term commitments. You may be tempted to dismiss ringtones as pointless for your style of music. But for hard core fans, its another way to show their support; and every time a phone rings and your song plays, it’s a free viral ad for your band.
With no upfront costs and and only a small amount of time required, what do you have to loose? Be sure to sure to promote your ringtones from you web site and social networking pages. Here are a few of the more popular ringtone and ringback services that welcome indie and d.iy. artists. Each has here own payment structure and techinal approach, but there’s nothing to keep you from siging up with more than one.
I heard a few songs via Amazon and decided to download the entire album. Which is one of the best things I did recently. From the opening guitar riff of “I’m Not Over” (which I like to sing along – very loudly, leaving me bewildered faces in cars next to me…), which explodes into the choral pronouncement; “I’m not over, I’m not over you just yet”, through the extraordinary rock-gospel mixup “Show Me What I’m Looking For”, through the concluding love and devotion anthem “When You Are Near” this album, while hinting back at an 80s sound, remains contemporary and wonderfully inspirational.
